Three weeks ago I finished Operation OCALA — a 67-mile endurance ruck through Florida terrain.
Heat. Humidity. Sand. Long miles under load.
That was the stress.
This is the rebuild.
And if I’m honest, recovery after a 67-mile ruck is where I’ve historically made mistakes.
Why Recovery After Operation OCALA Matters More Than the Event
If you read my full recap of Operation OCALA 2026 — When the Trail Takes What It Wants, you know the event itself demanded patience, discipline, and respect for the terrain.
The event creates the stimulus:
- Muscular microtrauma
- Connective tissue strain
- Nervous system fatigue
- Hormonal disruption
- Systemic inflammation
But adaptation does not happen during the event.
It happens during the recovery phase.
If you skip or shorten the deload phase after an endurance race, you interrupt the rebuilding process. You don’t accelerate progress. You cap it.
What Week Three of Post-Race Recovery Actually Looks Like
Here’s what recovery after a 67-mile ruck looks like for me in week three:
- HRV suppressed compared to baseline
- Resting heart rate elevated
- No intensity sessions
- Zone 1 walking only
- Light accessory strength work
- Strict ego management
No testing fitness.
No “see where I’m at” workouts.
No stacking stress because I feel decent.

After an event like Operation OCALA, restraint is not weakness. It is strategy.
The Endurance Deload Phase Most Athletes Skip
I’ve trained consistently for three years.
That consistency includes events like a 70-mile ruck through the Santa Monica Mountains, where durability was tested differently — elevation, terrain, cumulative load.
But I’ve been guilty of this pattern:
Finish a major effort.
Feel good enough within a week.
Ramp back up early.
Not recklessly — just subtly.
That’s how accumulated fatigue builds quietly.
The endurance deload phase is not optional if long-term durability is the goal.
- Build capacity
- Apply progressive overload
- Accumulate fatigue
- Deload intentionally
- Adapt
- Repeat
Proof That Recovery Discipline Works
One of the other athletes my coach trains — a woman coming off a major endurance effort — respected her entire recovery window.
No early intensity.
No unnecessary testing.
No ego.
When she returned to structured training, she was stronger, faster, and more durable.
Discipline during recovery after an endurance race is as important as discipline during the build.
The Flat Line Most Endurance Athletes Misinterpret
Post-race recovery feels unproductive.
Flat. Flat. Flat. Then lift.
Most athletes panic during the flat stretch. But the lift only comes if the deload phase is respected.
Forged in Failure. Fueled by Grit.
Operation OCALA was the stress.This recovery phase is the adaptation.
The race didn’t make me stronger. The way I recover from it will.
Recovery after a 67-mile ruck isn’t downtime. It’s the move that determines the next ceiling.
